Remote Modular Workforce Camps

Outland has been supplying remote modular workforce camps to Canada's resource sector since 1985.

Modular camps (also referred to as modular buildings, trailer units, workforce camps, construction camps) are manufactured off -site and transported when ready for installation.    As conditions become more extreme and remote, modular camps offer a cost-sharing alternative to fully permanent structures     Other advantages of modular construction are reduced site disruption and environmental impact noise, and increased mobility.   Modular camps can also be re-used and expanded.

Outland designs, manufactures and installs complete modular camps for remote workforces.   These camps are built at manufacturing facilities and can be shipped by ocean, rail or road to anywhere in Canada (or the world). We supply full workforce housing solutions including:

  • Turn Key workforce accommodation from 50 to 1,000 people

Modular buldings

Outland's modular camps are made of prefabricated buildings which have been built in remote facilities and then delivered to remote locations. The modules are assembled into a single residential building using a combination of cranes and trucks.  They can be "seamed" together to form a fully enclosed complex.  Clients choose this solution when there is no locally available, affordable housing.    Modular workforce housing is an ideal application for remote work camps because they are customizable and can be installed and mobilized relatively quickly.  The key advantage of modular construction is its flexibility in all environments.   Modular camp construction is used around the world.  In Canada it is primarily used by the resource sector in the north and far north where there is little or no access to alternative accomodation.  These camps are self contained with all catering and housekeeping being done on site.

Modular Building Uses

Modular buildings are used primarily for workforce housing in a variety industries.  They may be used for long-term, temporary or permanent workforce housing facilities, such as construction camps, mining camps, oil and gas camps, and utility projects.   The buildings are used in remote and rural areas where conventional construction may not be reasonable or possible.   The camps will often be used for as little as 3 months or 10 years or more.   Often camps will be re-used mulitple times over a 10 or 15 year period on different projects.

Evolution of Remote Camps

In response to a skilled trade shortage in Canada clients have been choosing camps with better amenties to attract and retain staff.   Double occupancy dorms with gang style washrooms are often replaced with private dorms with private washrooms or "Jack and Jill" style configurations.    Outland works with its clients to choose the best camp configuration.  We provide clients with the opimum workforce housing solution that balances cost with staff comfort.

Key Advantages of Modular Construction

There are many advantages to modular camp construction including:

  • Speed of construction and camp installation.    Allows for the building and the site work to be completed simultaneously, reducing the overall completion schedule.
  • Indoor construction of modules     Assembly is independent of weather, which increases work efficiency and avoids damaged building material.
  • Ability to service remote locations   Assembling a camp close to the work site reduces travel time which reduces cost.
  • Environmentally friendly construction process. Modular construction reduces waste and site disturbance compared to site-built structures.
  • Flexibility. Conventional buildings can be difficult to extend, however with a modular building you can simply add sections.   For example, Outland has provided clients with kitchens ranging in size from 700 to 35,000 square feet.
  • Rugged Constrution.  Well built modular camps can last for 10,  15 or 20 years or more.
